Adjective [Paelignian]

Etymology: According to De Vaan, directly from Proto-Italic *kerezjos, from *Kerēs, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer-. Weiss, however, suggests that the term must showcase the assimilation of a secondary *-rz- cluster to -rr-, a development also found in Oscan. There are differing developments in Sabellic depending upon whether the *-rz- cluster dates back to Proto-Italic or whether the *-rz- emerged at a later date via syncope. Thus, Weiss reconstructs the pre-form as *kerezios, which would have syncopated into *kerezjos, before developing into cerria. Yet, Weiss notes that the Sabellic development of original *-ios > *-jos usually prevents syncope, leading him to argue that the stem *kerr- must have been introduced from the base noun.
